From Concept to Cohort: Executing a Fully Funded Identity Retreat for Jewish Young Adults
About
Celebrate Your Uniqueness was a funded pilot retreat designed for Jewish young adults (ages 22–33) in the San Francisco Bay Area who felt “outside the mold” of mainstream Jewish spaces.
The retreat centered on identity integration — helping participants better understand what makes them unique, embrace it confidently, and build meaningful connection with others navigating similar experiences.
The project was grant-funded through Mem Global’s peer-led retreat initiative and executed end-to-end by Open Circle.
Challenge
In the San Francisco Bay Area Jewish young adult landscape, many participants who were multiracial, multi-faith, neurodivergent, or culturally non-Ashkenazi reported feeling peripheral in traditional Jewish spaces.
Programming existed, but not specifically for this demographic.
There was no retreat model explicitly designed to:
Affirm complex Jewish identities
Create psychological safety across differences
Integrate Jewish values with personal identity
Foster deep connection within an intentionally curated small cohort
The opportunity was clear: Test whether an identity-centered retreat model would resonate — and validate demand in the local market.
Solution
Open Circle identified the opportunity, secured $5,500 in funding, and led the retreat from concept to completion.
Our mandate was to design, market, and execute a high-impact, intimate retreat experience that balanced emotional depth with operational excellence.
Open Circle led:
Concept development & thematic framework (“Celebrate Your Uniqueness”)
Grant application & funding alignment
Full program design in partnership with a Jewish educator
Branding, messaging, and participant positioning
Application-based intake and cohort curation
Payment processing & pre-event communications
Venue coordination & catering logistics
Materials sourcing & budget management
On-site facilitation & experience flow
Post-retreat feedback collection & alumni retention structure
Results
15 spots were available. 18 applications were received. 12 participants were intentionally selected to create an intimate cohort environment. All 12 attended.
The retreat validated both demand and impact:
120% applicant-to-capacity ratio
100% attendance rate from accepted participants
$6,005 total revenue
91% funding-supported model
Positive net margin within grant constraints
Participant-reported outcomes included:
Increased confidence in expressing personal uniqueness
Strong peer bonds formed within 48 hours
Reduced feelings of isolation and burnout
Greater intentionality around integrating Jewish values into daily life
High levels of psychological safety and emotional resonance
Participants immediately asked when the next retreat would take place, signaling clear market demand for continuation.
Why It Worked
Clear cohort positioning
The retreat was explicitly designed for those who felt “outside the mold,” creating immediate resonance and emotional clarity.
Application-based curation
Intentional cohort selection ensured psychological safety and group cohesion from the start.
Balanced design architecture
Structured identity exercises were paired with organic bonding time, allowing depth without overwhelm.
Full-stack execution
From grant funding to logistics to on-site facilitation, every detail was aligned to protect participant experience and institutional credibility.
Impact
The project validated a replicable model for identity-centered cohort retreats, demonstrating both financial viability and strong participant demand.
Most importantly, it proved that when thoughtfully designed, small-group retreats can transform abstract identity tension into lasting belonging.
Final Takeaway
Celebrate Your Uniqueness highlights Open Circle’s ability to identify emerging community needs, secure funding, and execute high-impact retreats from concept to completion.
By combining strategic positioning, curated participant funnels, and immersive experience design, Open Circle turns retreat ideas into transformative, financially viable community experiences.
