Building Houston’s Hub for Young Jewish Life: from Concept to Citywide Platform
About
Hey Houston is a community platform designed to connect young Jewish adults in Houston through events, experiences, and local organizations.
Challenge
Houston had plenty of young adult Jewish events — but they were siloed across organizations, scattered across email newsletters, online forums, and word-of-mouth. For anyone new to town, it was nearly impossible to figure out where Jewish life was actually happening.
Synagogues and community organizations were competing for the same audience instead of coordinating.
The team knew something had to change. They needed a modern, cross-organizational solution that would connect people to the whole ecosystem, not just one institution.
Solution
Open Circle was brought in to research, strategize, and execute a full-scale go-to-market plan — leading everything from brand development to digital growth.
Our mandate was to build and launch Hey Houston — a unified digital homebase where every Jewish young adult in Houston could discover events, connect with peers, and find their place in the community.
Open Circle led:
Market research & brand messaging framework
Launch & growth strategy
Social media management (organic + paid)
Email marketing & PR coordination
Ambassador program design and management
Partnership development with 15+ local organizations
End-to-end marketing operations for launch events and follow-up engagement
Results
Within just two months of launch, Hey Houston became the go-to name for Jewish young adult life in Houston:
135 events listed on the Hey Houston calendar
120 accounts created on the platform
15 partner organizations collaborating on cross-promotions
16 trained ambassadors amplifying reach on the ground
84% open rate on the first newsletter, 65% on the launch recap email
208 Instagram followers at launch with strong engagement metrics
Press coverage in Jewish Herald-Voice, Houston’s go-to Jewish news outlet
Active Google Ads and social campaigns driving discovery and new visitors
Most importantly, Hey Houston transformed from a concept into a citywide brand and movement, powered by collective community buy-in and a clear, modern message that resolates with Hey Houston’s main demographic.
Why it worked
Fractional marketing department approach: Open Circle functioned as a full-stack marketing department without the overhead, handling creative, strategy, partnerships, and execution.
Community-first design: Hey Houston was intentionally unaffiliated, enabling participation from every synagogue and organization in the city.
Data-driven decisions: Every touchpoint, from paid social to newsletter cadence, was built on insights from real user behavior and engagement analytics.
Impact
What began as a single congregation’s experiment in community innovation evolved into Houston’s central hub for Jewish young adult life — and a scalable model for other cities nationwide.
Final Takeaway
Hey Houston’s success highlights Open Circle’s capacity to strategize and launch tech-enabled community platforms — bridging digital marketing, product thinking, and grassroots engagement to build movements that last.
